Do you think Maine should consider a ban on talking on a cell phone while driving?
76.35% Yes
21.62% No
not too long ago ,they targeted just teenagers.i do not think that is right.i have seen more adults driving, and talking on their cell phones.if they are going to ban cell phones, while driving, make it mandatory for all drivers.if you need to talk on the cell phone, then just pull over to the side of the road.it's just common sense.
sandy -augusta,maine,
All one needs to do is drive on 295 from Portland to Scarborough - frightening!
Don -Portland,
because a driver on a cell phone almost run into me.that person was'nt even looking where or even had they're turn signal on,the person missed me by inches.i dont use them ie. cellphone.
Robert -Bath / Maine,
to many times i have almost been hit by a cell hone user.it slows there reactoin time. i do not own a cell phone. i also have seen windham and portland cops using them while they drive.people drive either to fast or to slow because they do not see the speed limit signs. i have seen drivers go through stop signs and red lights while on there cell phones. one day this spring i saw a windham cop doing rader sitting at the fire station on rt. 302 across from manchester school talking on his cell as cars went speeding by me well over the posted 30 mph, but he was to busy talking on his cell to notice the speeders.
jim -windham,
yes absolutly completely dangerous to driver and everyone else on the road
marsha -falmouth,maine,
The ban should be State-wide for using hand held cell phones while operating a motor vehicle, hands free units should not be banned.
Ken -Raymond,
This may sound harsh, but how many of us would be able to look the family of someone who we killed in an accident in the eye and say "Oops, I'm so sorry, I was only chatting on my phone when the car swerved." Such a shame that in this country, in this day and age, we have to resort to making things illegal to just get folks to use some common sense.
Anna -Auburn ME,
ABSOLUTELY !!!! It's time.
Lynne -Pownal,
While traveling to a sox game last week. we did a pole on what gender was talking on the phone while travel. 10 to 1 women were on the phone than men. hands free is the way to go. last nite a women was making a illegal u-turn while on the phone. could have ended in a bad scene however others were watching the whole thing and a problem avoided .
david -scarborough,
Personally, I cannot imagine what could be so important to talk about on the cell while driving that couldn't be discussed AFTER pulling off the road first!
Doris -Lisbon,
i see way too many people yacking on the phone in the car too distrating look at that woman who was killed in crash because she dropped her phone there could not be possible any one phone call other than an emergency that anyone needs to be useing a phone while they drive .. i say ban them .. if they get caught a 1000.00 fine should be a deterent .. im telling you now anyone gets in a crash with me while they using a phone will be sued for the maximum i can get ..

Laura -Brunswick Maine,

B -Albany, MAINE,
YES, BECAUSE IT WILL GET PEOPLE TO FOUCOS MORE WHEN THEY ARE DRIVING.
Tina -Farmingdale,
I feel it should because, I see people doing it and they seem to have a hard time keeping there mind on the road. If they have to use there cellphone pull over to use it.
Rita -Oxford,Maine,
People just don't know they cannot drive and talk on the phone at the same time. I have had near misses because of people talking on cell phones. I have been behind a person and we are traveling along and then all of a sudden that person slows to a crawl. The stories just go on and on.
Carol -Richmond, ME,
I'm in favor and do beleive that it should be considered. I was rear ended by a someone who was reaching to get thier cell phone. Too much of a distraction. I'm in favor.
Crystal -North Waterboro,
Yes! I am 24 and although I grew up with cell phone mania, I still feel that the dangers outweigh the convinces of talking and driving. There is just no need to use a phone while driving; set your phone to a tone that will alert you when a call comes in and pull over if you have to.
Sarah -Saco, Maine,
As a Maine Certified Driving Instructor I have seen the distractions that cell phones have concerning driving.
Jennifer -Portland,
I think they should not talk on the cell phone while they are driving they could get in and accident
Irene -Biddeford Maine,
I think maine should not even be a state, no fredome, no help when you ask for it. The hypocrites in Maine think they know some one better then they know themself. I am and think you should start being honest at least with your selves you hypocrites, lyars, 2 faced ignorant self centered self rightious ingrates.
Ronnie -Lewiston,
I have had the unpleasant duty of notifying the parents of a driver who was killed while driving and chatting on the phone.
Pete -West Bath, Maine,
its about time, people have proven they cannot be responsible in the usage. they should ban them while operating a motor vehicle. i drive a truck and see its abuse constantly.
frank -north waterboro, maine,
didn't they pass that law for drivers anyway? what happened to that???? still, it's ridiculous to talk on a cell phone without a bluetooth headset.
lisa -auburn, maine,
yes definetly
Beverley -Bowdoin , Maine,
It is a Maine Law! I have a 15 minute commute and I see over a dozen drivers on their cell phones taking wide turns, running stop signs and red lights. Law enforcement officers need to do their job and pull these people over!
Cindy -Lewiston,
I dont have a problem with people talking on there cell phone as long as its HANDS FREE and both hands are on the wheel.
Kyle -Turner,
Driving can be dangerous enough without an added distraction. Hands free kits come fairly standard on cells now, and should be used only if necessary.
Aaron -Augusta/ ME,
Like anything else in Maine someone has to die before action is taken. Even one death due to innattention and cell phones is one too many.
Rob -Portland,
Yes due to the fact that a few people can't walk and chew gum.
Alton -Waterford, Maine,
TO MANY PEOPLE CANT WALK AND CHEW GUM AT THE SAME TIME LET ALONE TALK ON THE CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVEING. THE SHOULD GET A FINE FOR DRIVING AND TALKING.
KAREN -TOPSHAM,
would it make a difference. most cops talk on theirs when their driving around.
dennie -saco,
stop trying to legislate our lives
-,
yes this should be for all states at all times
beverly -largo, florida,
I don't think there should be a ban, but instead a fine if it causes reckless driving. Personally I don't find it a problem to drive while using a cell phone. All you need is common sense; if conditions don't allow you to fumble for your phone then don't. Ofcourse, there are those out there that should only concentrate on their driving. If you can't do anything at the same time or multi task without paying attention and you get distracted easily or are already a bad driver DON"T USE IT. There are many bad drivers out there and I think cell phones are a small factor on the list. I would be happy to volunteer to track those who drive recklessly or fail to abide by traffic laws. It has gotten out of hand.
Patricia -Portland,
absolutely, I just witnessed an accident this weekend involving a young girl on a cellphone...and I don't think hands free phones are any better, it's still distracting the driver.
